Feeling a little more adventurous? Then join us as we explore the various desert oases throughout Egypt. For many of these areas, we take you in a 4 wheel drive and hit the dunes!

  • Siwa Oasis lies between the Qattara Depression and the Great Sand Sea in the Western Desert, 560km from Cairo and around 50km east of the Libyan border. It covers an area about 20km wide and 80km long. 

    • Home to the ​Oracle of Ammon where Alexander the Great stopped and, according to theory, asked the Oracle about his true father and his right to rule Egypt.

    • The melted city of Shali - a small mountain of mud-brick houses built from kersheef, a combination of mud and salt from the nearby salt lakes which started to collapse during torrential rainstorms due to the high salt content, giving it the appearance of having melted

    • Cleopatra Spring/Pool - A stone pool in which you can see the natural spring water gurgling up and is popular for bathing

    • Siwa lakes - Birket al-Maraqi is the largest of the Siwa lakes at around 9sq km

    • Gebel al-Mawta (Mountain of the Dead) - visit the tombs of the 26th dynasty, Ptolemaic and Roman times

    • Fatnas Island - a wonderful spot to enjoy a mint tea and photograph stunning sunsets

  • Bahariya Oasis is the closest oasis to Cairo with many natural springs of warm water

    • Black desert, so-called due to the black dust and stones from mountain erosion and dolerite from ancient volcanic eruptions

    • Visit the museum of the Golden Mummies

  • Faiyum Oasis - once arid and now fertile area approx 100km from Cairo

    • Walk the seafloor of an ancient part of the Mediterranean Sea 

    • View the skeletons of once giant whales that swam the sea millions of years ago

    • Birkat Qaroun (Lake Quroun) more like an inland sea than a lake and the nearby waterfalls

  • Dakhla Oasis  - Site of a once vast lake where elephants, zebras, and ostriches roamed.

    • The Village of Mut is the largest of the sixteen villages in the area.

    • Visit Deir el Haga (the Stone Monastery) an important historical site built during the 1st century AD

  • Kharga Oasis -  Southernmost of the western desert oases and the closest to the Nile Valley. Crossroads for desert caravan trade routes

    • Visit the Temple of Hibis with its history across many periods including Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, and Roman ​

    • Stroll through the Necropolis of Al Bagawat then 2km further on visit the ruins of the Monastery of Al Kashef

  • Farafra Oasis

    • About 20km southeast of Farafra is the White Desert​ National Park, 300sq km of white naturally sculpted formations. Beautiful anytime but spectacular at sunrise and sunset.
