Experience  Cairo and  Surrounds

Welcome to Cairo,  founded in 969 AD, the modern capital of Egypt and where you will most likely start your travels from.

In the heart of Cairo, you will find the (current) Egyptian Museum, full of artefacts that trace the history and glory of ancient times, from the tools used by ancient inhabitants through to the royal mummies and of course the stunning treasures of Tutankhamun, the boy-king whose tomb was discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in November 1922. Of course, one couldn't visit Cairo and not visit the pyramids of Giza and be amazed at the sheer size of them (pictures you would have seen just don't do them justice!), and gaze in wonder at the Sphinx,  wondering what secrets it holds.

Places to visit in and around Cairo include:

  • Giza pyramids and Sphinx - walk, ride a camel, donkey or horse around them

  • Egyptian Museum (which will be relocating in 2020 from Tahrir Square to Fustat, closer to the Pyramids)

  • Khan el Khalili market  - Whether you want jewelry, clothing, souvenirs, spices, etc., this is the place to go

  • Sakkara & Imhotep museum - Visit the step pyramid of King Djoser and the museum named after the architect - Imhotep

  • Memphis - the first capital of Egypt and a city of great importance during the Old Kingdom

  • Old Cairo - the beautiful old walled city with sites from a Christian past and the beginnings of Islam in Egypt

  • Islamic Cairo - visit  the Islamic Museum and some of the most famous Islamic monuments

  • Coptic Cairo - From the decline of the Pharaonic period to when Christianity held the majority

  • Citadel of Salah El-Din - Established 12th century on Mokattam hill by Saladin, a famous Arabian leader

  • The Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Also called the Alabaster Mosque it stands by Saladin Citadel and is exquisite

  • The Red and Bent Pyramids of Dashur - Ancient  necropolis and the Bent pyramid was a precursor to Giza pyramids

  • Al Azhar park - a lovely public park  for a romantic stroll (especially in the evening ) or a stop at a café, with views across the city.
