Experience Aswan & Abu Simbel

IMG_8174.JPG

Welcome to Aswan, a lovely city in Upper Egypt which is situated on the Nile river which played an important part in antiquity as a strategic and commercial centre in the south.

Aswan was part of the Nubian kingdom in ancient times and where gold was mined (think of Tutankhamun's beautiful gold mask).

It was also the area where many wonderful temples were built for a variety of deities, standing for thousands of years...... until the 1960's when the Aswan High Dam was built, submerging the majority of the temples save the few which UNESCO painstakingly relocated, avoiding the encroaching floodwaters of the new dam. Two of the most well known of these are Abu Simbel and Philae Temple. There are videos of the relocation works available via the internet which are worth watching before your trip to Aswan as you will be even more in awe when you visit these sites.
